Open Question: I need an effective home remedy for cleaning brass cupboard and drawer handles!?

We are renovating a lot of areas in our home.. flipping this house basically. One of the things I am doing (at the same time as getting new counter tops installed), is cleaning up and polishing my wooden cupboards. I have good cleaners for that. The problem is that the handles on them are dated.. being brass. I want to clean them up as best as possible to see if

there is a marked improvment, and if not, I will be painting them black with “Painters Touch”. Any good advice on cleaners for brass? And any suggestions on the painting idea? I just don’t want to spend 2 bucks each on brand new handles, you know? It would cost 50 bucks just for NEW handles! Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. THANKS!
